Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate VAT backwards?
Divide the gross by 1 plus the rate. At 20 percent that is the gross divided by 1.2. Subtracting 20 percent from the gross is the common mistake and gives a smaller net than it should: 120 minus 20 percent is 96, but the correct net is 100.
How exact is it?
The arithmetic is exact and rounded the way money is, at the cent. What it cannot know is anything specific to you, so read it as the ordinary case rather than as advice.
