Frequently asked questions
Is this the rate I actually pay?
It is the state base rate. Counties, cities and special districts add their own sales tax on top, so the combined rate at a given address is usually higher and sometimes much higher. Check the rate for the exact address before you charge it.
Does the United States have VAT?
No. There is no national sales tax or VAT. Each state sets its own rate, five states have no statewide sales tax at all, and local jurisdictions add to it.
How do I take sales tax out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 7.25 percent, a total of 107.25 divided by 1.0725 gives 100 of net and 7.25 of tax. Subtracting the percentage instead gives the wrong answer.
Where do the rates come from?
From the standard published compilation of state rates, linked under the country picker. There is no single official national table, because sales tax is set state by state, and the link says so rather than calling itself official.
