Frequently asked questions

What are the income tax bands in France?

The result shows them: every band the income touched, its rate, the slice taxed in it and what that slice cost. The bands are the ones in force for the tax year printed under the result.

What is the difference between the effective and the marginal rate?

The effective rate is what you actually pay across the whole income. The marginal rate is what the next unit of income would cost. The marginal rate is always the higher of the two under a progressive scale, and it is the one that matters when deciding whether extra work is worth it.

Is this my exact tax bill?

No. It applies the statutory scale and the allowance everybody gets. Personal deductions, tax credits, other income and anything that depends on your circumstances are not modelled, so treat it as an estimate.

I want to start from a salary instead

Use the salary calculator. It takes social contributions off the gross first and then applies the income tax, which is the order a payslip does it in.
